U.S. imports of Carpets, etc. increased 6.77 percent through January to $81.95 million

U.S. imports of Carpets, etc. increased 6.77 percent from $76.75 million to $81.95 million through the first month of 2023 when compared to the same period the previous year, according to WorldCity analysis of the latest U.S. Census Bureau data.

The category ranked 393 through January among the roughly 1,265 import commodity groupings as classified by Census. It ranked No. 404 for the last full year with a total value of $1.01 billion, a $27.64 million, 2.67 percent decreased from the 2021 total.

Through January of this year the leading sources were No. 1 India, No. 2 Mexico, No. 3 China, No. 4 South Korea and No. 5 Turkey. The leading gateways were No. 1 Port of Savannah, Ga., No. 2 Port Laredo, No. 3 Port of Newark, No. 4 Port of Los Angeles and No. 5 Port of Virginia.

In the last previous full year, the leading sources were No. 1 India, No. 2 China, No. 3 Vietnam, No. 4 Mexico and No. 5 Turkey. The leading gateways were No. 1 Port of Savannah, Ga., No. 2 Port of Newark, No. 3 Port of Los Angeles, No. 4 Port Laredo and No. 5 Port of Virginia.

  • Port of Newark fell 1.96 percent compared to last year to $11.7 million.
  • Port of Los Angeles rose 9.64 percent compared to last year to $9.85 million.
  • Port of Virginia rose 49.16 percent compared to last year to $5.85 million.

There are several hundred airports, seaports and border crossings that handle international trade; they are, in turn, part of the roughly four dozen U.S. Customs districts.

Highlights for the top five foreign markets:

  • U.S. imports from No. 1 India increased $1.3 million, 5.23 percent, (31.81 percent market share).
  • U.S. imports from No. 2 Mexico increased $8.02 million, 130.41 percent, (17.28 percent market share).
  • U.S. imports from No. 3 China decreased $2.77 million, 19.41 percent, (14.06 percent market share).
  • U.S. imports from No. 4 South Korea increased $4.03 million, 169.94 percent, (7.8 percent market share).
  • U.S. imports from No. 5 Turkey increased $1.1 million, 24.94 percent, (6.71 percent market share).

All totaled, 77.67 percent of all these Carpets, etc. imports to the United States were shipped from the top five markets through January of this year. That is equal to $63.65 million of the $81.95 million total.
