U.S. imports of Sulfates increased 3.46 percent through August to $245.59 million

Through August of this year the leading sources were No. 1 Mexico, No. 2 Canada, No. 3 China, No. 4 Germany and No. 5 Taiwan. The leading sources were No. 1 Port Laredo, No. 2 Port of Newark, No. 3 Port of New Orleans, No. 4 Port of Seattle, WA and No. 5 Port of Baltimore, MD.

In the last previous full year, the leading sources were No. 1 Mexico, No. 2 China, No. 3 Canada, No. 4 Germany and No. 5 India. The leading sources were No. 1 Port Laredo, No. 2 Port of Newark, No. 3 Port of Southern Louisiana, No. 4 Port of Houston and No. 5 Port of New Orleans.

Looking at specific airports, seaports and border crossings, the top five through the first eight months of the year were:

  • Port Laredo fell 2.99 percent compared to last year to $81.19 million.
  • Port of Newark fell 5.34 percent compared to last year to $17.18 million.
  • Port of New Orleans rose 91.04 percent compared to last year to $16 million.
  • Port of Seattle, WA rose 34.63 percent compared to last year to $12.68 million.
  • Port of Baltimore, MD rose 291.33 percent compared to last year to $11.38 million.

There are several hundred airports, seaports and border crossings that handle international trade; they are, in turn, part of the roughly four dozen U.S. Customs districts.

Highlights for the top five foreign sources:

  • U.S. imports from No. 1 Mexico increased $1.03 million, 1.04 percent, (40.81 percent market share).
  • U.S. imports from No. 2 Canada decreased $3.25 million, 13.11 percent, (8.76 percent market share).
  • U.S. imports from No. 3 China decreased $8.1 million, 29.69 percent, (7.81 percent market share).
  • U.S. imports from No. 4 Germany increased $3.19 million, 20.37 percent, (7.68 percent market share).
  • U.S. imports from No. 5 Taiwan increased $4.21 million, 43.61 percent, (5.65 percent market share).

All totaled, 70.7 percent of all these Sulfates imports to the United States were shipped from the top five sources through August of this year. That is equal to $173.64 million of the $245.59 million total.
