In the last previous full year, the leading sources were No. 1 Japan, No. 2 South Korea, No. 3 Italy, No. 4 Germany and No. 5 China. The leading sources were No. 1 Port of Los Angeles, No. 2 Port of Newark, No. 3 Port of Virginia, No. 4 Port of Baltimore, MD and No. 5 Detroit Ambassador Bridge, MI.

  • Port of Newark rose 26.21 percent compared to last year to $112.86 million.
  • Port of Baltimore, MD rose 100.01 percent compared to last year to $51.18 million.
  • Port of Virginia fell 45.08 percent compared to last year to $47.01 million.
  • Port of Houston rose 24.48 percent compared to last year to $33.23 million.

There are several hundred airports, seaports and border crossings that handle international trade; they are, in turn, part of the roughly four dozen U.S. Customs districts.

Highlights for the top five foreign sources:

  • U.S. imports from No. 1 Germany increased $34.81 million, 43.78 percent, (18.71 percent market share).
  • U.S. imports from No. 2 Japan decreased $14.02 million, 12.85 percent, (15.56 percent market share).
  • U.S. imports from No. 3 Italy decreased $386,261, 0.48 percent, (13.04 percent market share).
  • U.S. imports from No. 4 China decreased $3.15 million, 5.3 percent, (9.23 percent market share).
  • U.S. imports from No. 5 Switzerland decreased $1.68 million, 3.44 percent, (7.73 percent market share).

All totaled, 64.27 percent of all these Laser-based machine tools imports to the United States were shipped from the top five sources through August of this year. That is equal to $392.71 million of the $611.02 million total.
