U.S. imports of Wine increased 8.76 percent through January to $570.32 million

U.S. imports of Wine increased 8.76 percent from $524.37 million to $570.32 million through the first month of 2023 when compared to the same period the previous year, according to WorldCity analysis of the latest U.S. Census Bureau data.

The category ranked 90 through January among the roughly 1,265 import commodity groupings as classified by Census. It ranked No. 91 for the last full year with a total value of $7.32 billion, a $258.02 million, 3.65 percent increase from the 2021 total.

Through January of this year the leading sources were No. 1 France, No. 2 Italy, No. 3 New Zealand, No. 4 Spain and No. 5 Australia. The leading gateways were No. 1 Port of Newark, No. 2 Port of Oakland, Calif., No. 3 Port of Houston, No. 4 Port Miami and No. 5 Port of Boston.

In the last previous full year, the leading sources were No. 1 Italy, No. 2 France, No. 3 New Zealand, No. 4 Australia and No. 5 Argentina. The leading gateways were No. 1 Port of Newark, No. 2 Port of Oakland, Calif., No. 3 Port of Houston, No. 4 Port Miami and No. 5 Port of Boston.

  • Port of Newark rose 10.37 percent compared to last year to $235.1 million.
  • Port of Oakland, Calif. rose 4.37 percent compared to last year to $90.19 million.
  • Port of Houston rose 53.3 percent compared to last year to $42.11 million.
  • Port Miami rose 32.67 percent compared to last year to $37 million.
  • Port of Boston rose 8.53 percent compared to last year to $18.09 million.

There are several hundred airports, seaports and border crossings that handle international trade; they are, in turn, part of the roughly four dozen U.S. Customs districts.

Highlights for the top five foreign markets:

  • U.S. imports from No. 1 France increased $29.16 million, 17.72 percent, (33.97 percent market share).
  • U.S. imports from No. 2 Italy decreased $8.57 million, 5.2 percent, (27.41 percent market share).
  • U.S. imports from No. 3 New Zealand increased $22.57 million, 34.04 percent, (15.58 percent market share).
  • U.S. imports from No. 4 Spain increased $11.05 million, 53.62 percent, (5.55 percent market share).
  • U.S. imports from No. 5 Australia decreased $1.52 million, 5.19 percent, (4.87 percent market share).

All totaled, 87.39 percent of all these Wine imports to the United States were shipped from the top five markets through January of this year. That is equal to $498.4 million of the $570.32 million total.
