U.S. imports of Engine parts decreased 3.49 percent through August to $7.52 billion

The category ranked 54 through August among the roughly 1,265 import commodity groupings as classified by Census. It ranked No. 57 for the last full year with a total value of $11.35 billion, a $127.06 million, 1.13 percent increase from the 2023 total.

Through August of this year the leading sources were No. 1 Mexico, No. 2 Japan, No. 3 China, No. 4 Germany and No. 5 Canada. The leading sources were No. 1 Port Laredo, No. 2 Port of Los Angeles, No. 3 Detroit Ambassador Bridge, MI, No. 4 Port of Newark and No. 5 Port of Virginia.

In the last previous full year, the leading sources were No. 1 Mexico, No. 2 Japan, No. 3 China, No. 4 Germany and No. 5 Canada. The leading sources were No. 1 Port Laredo, No. 2 Port of Los Angeles, No. 3 Detroit Ambassador Bridge, MI, No. 4 Port of Virginia and No. 5 Port of Newark.

Looking at specific airports, seaports and border crossings, the top five through the first eight months of the year were:

  • Port Laredo rose 2.46 percent compared to last year to $2.27 billion.
  • Port of Los Angeles rose 9.98 percent compared to last year to $892.04 million.
  • Detroit Ambassador Bridge, MI fell 14.44 percent compared to last year to $548 million.
  • Port of Newark fell 7.25 percent compared to last year to $412.34 million.
  • Port of Virginia fell 29.03 percent compared to last year to $340.39 million.

There are several hundred airports, seaports and border crossings that handle international trade; they are, in turn, part of the roughly four dozen U.S. Customs districts.

Highlights for the top five foreign sources:

  • U.S. imports from No. 1 Mexico decreased $67.61 million, 2.55 percent, (34.44 percent market share).
  • U.S. imports from No. 2 Japan increased $55.93 million, 5.43 percent, (14.44 percent market share).
  • U.S. imports from No. 3 China increased $25.18 million, 2.97 percent, (11.6 percent market share).
  • U.S. imports from No. 4 Germany decreased $60.3 million, 8.15 percent, (9.04 percent market share).
  • U.S. imports from No. 5 Canada decreased $13.48 million, 2.8 percent, (6.22 percent market share).

All totaled, 75.73 percent of all these Engine parts imports to the United States were shipped from the top five sources through August of this year. That is equal to $5.69 billion of the $7.52 billion total.
