U.S. imports of Toilet paper increased 13.01 percent through August to $1.42 billion

The category ranked 220 through August among the roughly 1,265 import commodity groupings as classified by Census. It ranked No. 230 for the last full year with a total value of $2 billion, a $294.81 million, 17.30 percent increase from the 2023 total.

Through August of this year the leading sources were No. 1 Canada, No. 2 China, No. 3 Indonesia, No. 4 Mexico and No. 5 Vietnam. The leading sources were No. 1 Port Huron Blue Water Bridge, MI, No. 2 Port of Los Angeles, No. 3 Champlain Border Crossing, NY, No. 4 Port of Newark and No. 5 Buffalo Peace Bridge, NY.

In the last previous full year, the leading sources were No. 1 Canada, No. 2 China, No. 3 Indonesia, No. 4 Mexico and No. 5 Vietnam. The leading sources were No. 1 Port of Los Angeles, No. 2 Port of Newark, No. 3 Detroit Ambassador Bridge, MI, No. 4 Champlain Border Crossing, NY and No. 5 Alexandria Bay land-based cargo, NY.

Looking at specific airports, seaports and border crossings, the top five through the first eight months of the year were:

  • Port Huron Blue Water Bridge, MI rose 154.14 percent compared to last year to $183.24 million.
  • Port of Los Angeles fell 5.99 percent compared to last year to $151.42 million.
  • Champlain Border Crossing, NY rose 27.56 percent compared to last year to $132.57 million.
  • Port of Newark rose 9.29 percent compared to last year to $120.02 million.
  • Buffalo Peace Bridge, NY rose 16.91 percent compared to last year to $99.3 million.

There are several hundred airports, seaports and border crossings that handle international trade; they are, in turn, part of the roughly four dozen U.S. Customs districts.

Highlights for the top five foreign sources:

  • U.S. imports from No. 1 Canada increased $85.9 million, 16.18 percent, (43.33 percent market share).
  • U.S. imports from No. 2 China decreased $80.32 million, 18.39 percent, (25.04 percent market share).
  • U.S. imports from No. 3 Indonesia increased $54.18 million, 86.56 percent, (8.21 percent market share).
  • U.S. imports from No. 4 Mexico increased $34.8 million, 56.16 percent, (6.8 percent market share).
  • U.S. imports from No. 5 Vietnam increased $10.84 million, 18.92 percent, (4.79 percent market share).

All totaled, 88.17 percent of all these Toilet paper imports to the United States were shipped from the top five sources through August of this year. That is equal to $1.25 billion of the $1.42 billion total.
