U.S. imports of Misc. footwear decreased 17.37 percent through August to $635.8 million

The category ranked 397 through August among the roughly 1,265 import commodity groupings as classified by Census. It ranked No. 345 for the last full year with a total value of $1.19 billion, a $180.54 million, 17.86 percent increase from the 2023 total.

Through August of this year the leading sources were No. 1 China, No. 2 Vietnam, No. 3 Italy, No. 4 Cambodia and No. 5 Indonesia. The leading sources were No. 1 Port of Los Angeles, No. 2 Port of Long Beach, No. 3 Port of Newark, No. 4 Port of Tacoma, WA and No. 5 Port of Seattle, WA.

In the last previous full year, the leading sources were No. 1 China, No. 2 Vietnam, No. 3 Italy, No. 4 Cambodia and No. 5 Thailand. The leading sources were No. 1 Port of Los Angeles, No. 2 Port of Long Beach, No. 3 Port of Seattle, WA, No. 4 Port of Newark and No. 5 Port of Tacoma, WA.

Looking at specific airports, seaports and border crossings, the top five through the first eight months of the year were:

  • Port of Long Beach fell 10.2 percent compared to last year to $109.59 million.
  • Port of Newark fell 6.57 percent compared to last year to $36.48 million.
  • Port of Tacoma, WA fell 15.05 percent compared to last year to $29.93 million.
  • Port of Seattle, WA fell 59.02 percent compared to last year to $23.17 million.

There are several hundred airports, seaports and border crossings that handle international trade; they are, in turn, part of the roughly four dozen U.S. Customs districts.

Highlights for the top five foreign sources:

  • U.S. imports from No. 1 China decreased $188.34 million, 29.27 percent, (71.57 percent market share).
  • U.S. imports from No. 2 Vietnam increased $34.32 million, 54.62 percent, (15.28 percent market share).
  • U.S. imports from No. 3 Italy increased $3.18 million, 16.1 percent, (3.61 percent market share).
  • U.S. imports from No. 4 Cambodia increased $11.77 million, 162.15 percent, (2.99 percent market share).
  • U.S. imports from No. 5 Indonesia increased $5.91 million, 324.73 percent, (1.21 percent market share).

All totaled, 94.66 percent of all these Misc. footwear imports to the United States were shipped from the top five sources through August of this year. That is equal to $601.87 million of the $635.8 million total.
